Nature and role of the committee

Mondragon Unibertsitatea’s Research Ethics Committee is an independent, impartial and interdisciplinary advisory body reporting to the University’s Management Council, basically created for the purpose of evaluating the ethical aspects of the research projects carried out at the university when so required. The Committee has the following functions:  

  • Ethically assessing the research projects and issuing ethical standards reports as requested by institutions and researchers on the proposals for research activities and projects to be totally or partially undertaken by the university staff, at its facilities or using its equipment or data.
  • Any other functions that may be attributed to it by Mondragon Unibertsitatea’s Management Council.

Composition of the committee

  • The Mondragon Unibertsitatea Research Ethics Committee will be chaired by the Coordinator of Research and Knowledge Transfer of the Mondragon Unibertsitatea Higher Polytechnic School.
  • The University’s General Secretary will act as the technical secretary.
  • The person holding the post of DPO (Data Protection Officer) will form part of the Committee together with three other members, who will be the three people responsible for R&KT cooperation at the Faculties of Business Studies (Enpresagintza), Humanities and Education Sciences and Gastronomy/Basque Culinary Center.
  • Also, in all matters considered relevant, the Committee may receive participation and counselling from experts on ethical issues and experts on the matter subject to doubt during the evaluation.

Procedure for the committee's drafting of ethical standards reports

Submission of projects for evaluation

In order to respond to the demands for research project evaluation and issue of ethical standards reports, the researchers responsible for a project must submit a duly filled in and signed evaluation application to the Research Ethics Committee, together with the corresponding project documentation, as described in the next point below.

Projects for doctoral theses, where applicable, must be submitted by the thesis supervisor, who will be the person responsible for submitting and signing the application.

Similarly, all articles or research papers requiring an ethical standards report on their methodology by the Research Ethics Committee before publication in specialist journals are also subject to evaluation.

Procedure for drafting ethical standards reports

A brief report on the project for which the ethical standards report is being applied for must also be submitted together with the evaluation application.

After study of the documentation, the research projects submitted for evaluation by the REC will be rated as one of the following:

  • Favourable report
  • Favourable report subject to conditions
  • Unfavourable report

The Committee Rules comply with the privacy policy established by Mondragon Unibertsitatea, in accordance with General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 of the European Parliament and the Council of 27 April 2016 and Organic Law 3/2018 of 5 December on Personal Data Protection and Guarantee of Digital Rights.
